Odorous House Ant
The odorous house ant is the most common of all household ants. They are aptly named from the strong, rotten coconut smell that is produced when crushing them. They commonly enter homes when searching for food, water and shelter.
What do odorous house ants look like?
Odorous house ants are tiny brownish black ants. They are approximately one eighth of an inch in size. Their body is segmented and oval in shape.
Odorous house ants habits and behaviors
Odorous house ants are social creatures that live in large colonies. They are in constant search of food and water. Nests are often found next to sources of water. Indoors they can be found beneath leaky fixtures, in wall voids near hot water pipes and in heaters, just to name a few. Outdoors they are often found in exposed damp soil under piles of leaves, wood and other decaying vegetation. After periods of rain these adaptable creatures will leave their nest and re-establish a nest in a more desirable location. To say that they have a sweet tooth is an understatement. They are especially drawn to all forms of sugar.
Are odorous house ants Dangerous?
Although they do not pose a direct health threat to people or animals, odorous house ants are a nuisance and can contaminate food. They are not a welcomed guest in any home or business.
