Cockroaches Causing Problems In Our Kitchens

The word “cockroach” usually makes most people, homeowners especially, cringe just at the sound of it. We would all very much like to avoid cockroaches in our homes, but do we know why? Most of us simply don’t like the way they look physically…and don’t need any more proof than that. Cockroaches are unsightly and surprisingly, they are nastier than they look.

The most common type of cockroach in the South Carolina area is the German cockroach. However, there are less common roach species such as American and Oriental cockroaches that we need to worry about, too. The place in our homes where these roaches can cause the most harm is in our kitchens. Cockroaches are drawn to our kitchens for one major reason: they want to be close to food and water sources. They’ll eat just about anything ranging from actual food to soap to toothpaste. The kitchen is exactly where you do not want cockroaches to be getting cozy. They can spread several kinds of bacteria, parasites, and pathogens that affect humans. Some humans can even have mild allergic reactions to German cockroaches, especially children who suffer from asthma.

Because cockroaches are a threat to families within a household, it’s important to prevent them from getting into your home in the first place. Cockroaches can fit through very small openings so you’ll want to check out the exterior of your home and repair and seal any cracks, holes, or other small entry points. They can also gain entrance into a home by riding on cardboard boxes, grocery bags, or used appliances, so check those over before bringing them inside. You’ll also want to eliminate what attracts them to your property by properly storing your garbage and not leaving dog food or other food outside. Inside, keep your kitchen clean and clear of any unnecessary food items on counters and always make sure to clean up spills and crumbs.
