Common Nuisance Pests To Watch Out For This Summer

Summer is here and everywhere you turn you are likely encountering summer pests. While we tend to be acutely aware of harmful pests like bees, mosquitoes, ticks, termites, and cockroaches, we overlook the more harmless ones. Many nuisance pests are prominent in the summer, such as box elder bugs, earwigs, crickets, ladybugs, millipedes, silverfish, and springtails. No matter the pest or size of the infestation around your South Carolina home, Aiken Pest Control can help.

Problems That Nuisance Pests Cause

If pests are nothing more than a nuisance, then why do we even worry about them?  Some pests, even if they are relatively harmless to us, can still be problematic and an indication of a bigger problem. If your property has a host of harmless pests, it’s likely attracting other, more harmful pests, as well. Let’s take a closer look at each of these nuisance pests and the problems they can cause.

Box Elder Bugs
Box elder bugs overwinter in cracks within your home, around windows, and in sheds and basements.  During the summer they emerge. If you kill them inside your home and leave them there, their carcasses attract other larger and more damaging beetles.

Earwigs
More commonly known as pincer bugs, earwigs attract birds and spiders as they are a tasty food source.  Earwigs are a nuisance as they eat plants and can ruin gardens and crops.

Crickets
Crickets probably don’t bother you much until they get into your house and start their chirping. It’s enough to drive a person mad. However, that won’t cause any harm. They can, however, eat fabric and upholstery, so it’s important to get them out.

Ladybugs
Ladybugs may be spotted during the summer around your windows or crawling out of tiny cracks in your walls. They overwinter there and leave their pheromones to attract other ladybugs. The only issue with them is that, when fearful, they excrete their blood, which can stain your walls.

Millipedes
Millipedes and their creepy-crawly “million” legs mean you probably don’t want to encounter these pests in your home. They excrete a foul odor when threatened, which can be irritating to the skin. They also make a good snack for other pests and may indicate that you have a moisture problem.

Silverfish
Silverfish are attracted to glue and fibers. They can destroy books, paper, fabric, wallpaper, and carpeting. Silverfish are sometimes even found in hair, coffee, or sugar.

Springtails
Springtails are attracted to areas of moisture and will come into your home when it’s dry outside. If left alone, they can multiply quickly and attract other pests, causing a larger problem.
