What Good Is A Cockroach Anyway?

It is said that every living thing exists for a reason. It can be hard to imagine that the cockroach can be anything more than a disgusting, annoying, and harmful pest when, in reality, the cockroach is extremely helpful. When things die, cockroaches help them decompose so they can be better absorbed into the earth. In nature, this process is vital, and without it, many rotting smelly things would not be able to decompose properly. It is only when cockroaches get into homes that they go from helpful to hurtful and earn the title of pest.

More Facts About Roaches

Here are some facts that you may not know about cockroaches:

  • Did you know that there are over 4000 species of cockroaches living on our planet? Out of these, only 30 are considered pests to humans, and out of those 30, just 5 are common here in South Carolina.
  • Cockroaches are the trashcans of the pest world and will eat practically anything, including paper, glue, soap, cloth, hair, and even poop. They do, however, prefer foods high in protein and sugar.
  • Cockroaches are incredibly resilient and can survive things that most other insects cannot. They can go a month without food, a week without water, can play dead, and can withstand high amounts of pressure.
  • Female cockroaches get pregnant for life and can lay between 14 and 36 eggs during their one-year lifespan.
  • Recent medical research finds antibiotic properties inside cockroaches that could be used to advance pharmaceutical products and help cure various forms of sicknesses.

Why You Don't Want Cockroaches In Your Home

Although cockroaches are a necessity to our ecosystem, they can be dangerous and disruptive when they get into homes. The time they spend around filth covers them in bacteria that they can track throughout houses—on countertops, and over left out food. In turn, being exposed to the places they have been can make you and your family very sick. Cockroaches also shed releasing tiny particulates into the air that can trigger asthma attacks.
