What To Do When Mouse Traps Just Aren't Working In Your Aiken Home

August 28, 2020

Having a rodent infestation is almost a rite of passage for new homeowners. If you have lived in your home long enough, chances are you have already dealt with furry invaders at least once or twice. You may have even found success eliminating them on your own without having to call in a professional, most likely with the use of traps and some form of bait. The only question is, why is this same strategy not working now? Have the mice and/or rats in your home learned how to avoid traps or is something else going on that you don’t know about. Either way, we are here today to help you better understand rodents, and share with you the reason why rodent traps aren’t always the best solution.

Common Rodents Around Aiken

Here in Aiken there are only two types of rodents who are known for invading homes, rats and mice. If you have ever visited your local pet store, or seen these creatures on TV, you may already know how to tell the two apart. Mice are much smaller than rats, have ears that are proportionally larger compared to that of rats, and are equipped with long almost hairless tails. Rats, on the other hand are much bigger, have a wider backside, and have more predominantly hairy tails.

The Dangers Of Rodents

When rodents aren’t kept in cages as pets, they tend to get fairly dirty. If you know anything about unclean environments, you know that they are a quick way to pick up bacteria and get sick. When rodents enter into homes, they carry inside the bacteria they have picked up from trash, sewage, and dead organisms. This translates to potential disease for your family, pets, and friends. Just a few diseases rodents have been known to carry and spread include salmonellosis, hantavirus, the plague, choriomeningitis, and leptospirosis.

Why Traps Don’t Always Cut It With Rodents

Traps are an amazing resource to handle rodents but fall short when infestations become too large. This is because of two factors. For one, traps only catch unaware rodents. If more than a couple of rodents are present inside your home, they will learn to associate traps with danger and will begin to avoid them. Sometimes rodents even learn how to remove baits from traps or trigger them without getting caught. The other thing that makes traps insufficient is how fast rodents can reproduce. Even if you can catch 3 rodents a week, females are able to reproduce so quickly that you will never be able to keep up with population growth.

Trust us when we tell you, if traps don’t work within a week, you need to call in the professionals. Keep in mind that the longer rodents are allowed to roam freely inside your home the more likely you or one of your family members is to get sick.
