Why Spiders Invade South Carolina Homes During The Summer

August 21, 2019

There are hundreds of great summer activities such as hiking, swimming, camping, playing sports, or watching movies. As we move toward the end of summer, you could be re-watching all your favorite superhero movies. While you may love following the adventures of Spiderman, you probably don't want to encounter any real spiders watching with you.

Spiders In South Carolina

There are many different kinds of spiders in South Carolina and across the United States—the two most worrisome being the black widow and the brown recluse. These spiders’ bites aren’t fatal, but they can cause an infection, and they are painful. A brown recluse bite can even cause some people to have fevers, headaches, body aches, and rashes.

Along with the more dangerous ones, there are many kinds of house spiders in South Carolina. These are attracted to three things: shelter, food, and water. In South Carolina, the warm weather can keep spiders around all year. Even in winter, spiders can hide out in the crevices of your home to survive the colder months.

Why Are Spiders In Your Home?

Shelter

Spiders can find shelter easily. They will take up residence in any dark and undisturbed corner of your house. To avoid this, make sure there are no easy entry points. Check for cracks in the foundation or holes in the exterior of your home. Fix any ripped screens on your windows and make sure there are no spaces under doors for spiders to crawl under. Also, clear debris from your yard. If there is overgrowth near your house, spiders will crawl from the plants to your foundation.

Water

Water can be difficult to control, and spiders need very little to survive. However, you can control the moisture in your home. Spiders love moist, humid areas so check for leaks and monitor the humidity levels in your house. Use a dehumidifier if needed, and you’ll be less likely to attract spiders.

Food

The final factor that attracts spiders is food. Spiders eat many other kinds of pests, such as mosquitoes, flies, and even cockroaches. If you are finding a lot of spiders, it probably means they are feeding on another pest already in your home. Eliminate other insects by keeping exterior lights off at night, using good screens over windows and doors, and getting routine pest control services to control all pests in your home. Once you eliminate other bugs, spiders will also relocate to an area with more available food.

Spider Infestations

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, spiders get into a home and cause an infestation. Controlling a spider’s access to food, water, and shelter might help deter, but can’t guarantee, spider-free living. When spiders come into your home, it’s time to call for professional help.
