WHO ELSE IN AIKEN WANTS TO BE DONE
WITH HOUSE MICE FOR GOOD?

When mice get into your home, they can be frustrating. You could be kept awake by noises in the walls of your bedroom as you're about to go to sleep. You could wake up to find that a pile of your favorite cereal is on the outside of the box. You may notice a hole in the bottom corner of one of your doors, or a hole chewed through the upholstery of a piece of furniture. These are the kinds of mouse problems that make you want to be done with mice for good. But are you aware that mice can have a serious impact on your life in ways you don't even realize? Let's talk for a moment about the secret threat mice can present to you and everyone living in your home, including your pets.

Sickness

There are many ways a mouse can make you sick. They can contaminate food when they get into packages. They can contaminate food packages as they rub up against them. They can contaminate surfaces as they crawl over them. They can contaminate dishes when they come in contact with them. Why do mice contaminate everything they touch, there are three reasons:

  • Mice climb in trash cans, dumpsters, sewers, and other places that are dirty. In these places, they pick up harmful bacteria and parasitic worms on their fur. As they move about your home, their dirty fur can be a source of contamination.
  • Mice leave their waste where they sleep. This is another way their fur can become a source of contamination.
  • Mice leave their waste as they explore. When their feces or urine are deposited in a sensitive location, it can cause direct contamination.

House mice are linked to many illnesses, including Leptospirosis, salmonellosis, tularemia, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM). Some of the illnesses caused by mice are bacterial in nature, and can lead to stomach sickness. If mice are infesting your home and you, or others in your home, are getting sick with flu-like symptoms, mice could be to blame.

Ticks

You are probably aware that mice can bring ticks into your home, but are you aware that a tiny mouse can have as many as a hundred seed ticks on its body? Seed ticks are the larvae of ticks. They're very small, and they only have six legs. As those seed ticks develop, they will begin to fall off and search for a larger host. This makes them a threat to everyone in your home. Ticks can spread a long list of diseases, such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, and many more. If you get one of these diseases, you can get very sick. Some have the potential to be fatal.

Fleas

There are many diseases that can be spread by fleas. In the United States, fleas are a known vector for Murine typhus, tungiasis, tularemia, and the bubonic plague (yes, that's still a thing). When your dog or cat brings fleas into your home, the disease threat is slightly less because your pet is less likely to have the diseases that can be spread by fleas. When a flea draws a blood meal from your dog or cat, it probably won't pick something up that it can spread to you. This is not the case with mice. When a flea hops onto an infected mouse and feeds, it can hop off and transmit a disease to you if it bites you. It can also make your pets sick. Not only is it disheartening to see your pet suffer, you have to suffer with the vet bills as well.

House Fire

There are many things an itty bitty mouse can chew on in your home, but live wires are the worst. If a wire is cut and it sparks a fire. We don't have to tell you how bad that is. Experts estimate that 20 percent of undetermined fires are caused by rodents.
