Snake repellent is not a permanent form of snake control. Our approach focuses on reducing snake activity and discussing property conditions that may give snakes food, cover, water, or access near occupied areas. We apply integrated pest management principles throughout our broader pest management work.

Repellent performance can vary from one property to another. Clemson Extension notes that snake repellents can produce inconsistent results, and temperature, humidity, rainfall, and reapplication intervals can affect how they perform. No single method works the same way in every setting.

Property conditions that can contribute to snake activity include:

• Dense vegetation, brush, debris, or stacked materials that provide cover
• Rodent attractants and other food sources near structures or outdoor areas
• Water sources, stormwater ponds, drainage areas, and damp locations
• Gaps and sheltered spaces around garages, crawl spaces, sheds, and storage areas

Venomous Snakes Around Aiken Properties

Copperheads, cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes are venomous snakes of concern in this area. However, a sighting alone doesn’t identify a snake species or mean that it is venomous. South Carolina has many nonvenomous snake species, and they can help limit rodent populations.

Keep people and pets away from an unidentified snake, and don’t attempt to handle it. If you can’t distinguish a venomous snake from a nonvenomous one, Clemson Extension advises contacting a qualified wildlife control operator rather than approaching the animal.
